Understanding Why Teenagers Are So Depressed

Adolescents are faced with five developmental challenges before they reach adulthood, which contribute to the stress of being a teenager and could contribute to depression, according to Dr. Harold Koplewicz , one of the nation’s leading child and adolescent psychiatrists. The widely recognized innovator is a strong advocate for child mental health, and a master clinician who helps parents make sense out of the developmental challenges children face. He has been repeatedly recognized in America’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, and New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors in New York.” In 2006, he was appointed Director of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI), making him the third person to hold that position since the institution’s founding in 1952. He is also the founding president of the Child Mind Institute.

Editor's Note: Dr. Harold Koplewicz is a regular contributor to Big Think, a knowledge forum. Its Big "Thinkers" believe that success in the future is about knowing the ideas that allow you to manage and master this universe of information and go about delivering new ideas daily.
